'PR offers you the opportunity to create impact in today’s chaotic world'

Stepping under the CIPR member spotlight this edition is an award-winning chartered PR practitioner who is expanding his agency from Sri Lanka to Finland.

Name: Thanzyl Thajudeen
Job title and company: Managing director, Mark and Comm
Location: Sri Lanka
Time in PR: 14+ years

What does your current role involve?
I lead Mark and Comm, a responsible communications agency in Sri Lanka set up in 2011, and I act as the principal consultant for diverse clients. My role spans strategy, reputation and purposeful campaigns across sectors, shaping narratives that drive both business and societal impact. I’ve also moved to Helsinki while leading the agency back in my home country and look forward to expanding to such markets here.

What do you love most about working in public relations?
The ability to influence responsibly, build trust, and connect people with purpose. Many clients and projects have their own set of challenges, approaches and distinctions. And it’s never boring. There’s always something to learn from. The curiosity to work on shaping perceptions, opening minds, and creating lasting impact in today’s noisy, fast-paced, chaotic world will always keep me occupied.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Being awarded the CIPR Fellowship certainly is one and becoming a chartered PR practitioner just a few weeks ago. I would also say being named among Campaign Asia’s 40 under 40 for 2024 was a real victory in recognition of all my work in the region. I’m also proud to always be an advocate for the industry, highlighting the profession is one that could be used to shape the world in a very positive way.

How long have you been a CIPR member and what made you join?
I’ve been a member since 2023. I couldn’t be prouder than to join the world’s oldest and the only chartered body for the PR profession, and an institution where I can connect with like-minded practitioners and be part of a community that champions ethical, strategic, and responsible communications, and of course, continuous learning.

How does the CIPR support your career?
CIPR has been instrumental in shaping my professional development, from its thought leadership and CPD resources to the credibility and global recognition that come with membership. It reinforces my commitment to high standards and accountability in PR with its code of conduct. The community and network also offer invaluable insights and opportunities to learn, share, and grow globally.

Best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
“Stay curious, stay grounded.” In a field that evolves constantly, curiosity keeps you relevant while humility keeps you human.
