Why taking a private disagreement public could prove costly for Ronaldo’s reputation

Cristiano Ronaldo’s public criticism of his manager could distract from his extraordinary footballing legacy and what the incident reveals about how reputations are managed in the public eye.

Cristiano Ronaldo may have scored hundreds of goals throughout his career, but his latest Instagram outburst could prove to be an own goal of a very different kind.

As a reputation expert, I believe his decision to publicly criticise Portugal manager Jorge Jesus was an entirely avoidable PR mistake. Ronaldo may have legitimate reasons to feel aggrieved, but turning a private disagreement into an international news story risks damaging his image at a crucial stage of his career.

Ronaldo's lengthy Instagram statement accused his manager of breaking promises following his departure from the national team camp. While I understand the desire to defend yourself when you feel you've been treated unfairly, I question whether a public statement of this scale was the right way to handle the situation.

Ronaldo may have every reason to be frustrated. However, publishing nearly 2,000 words about a disagreement with your manager is unlikely to win public sympathy. He's one of the most successful footballers in history. His career is defined by extraordinary goalscoring records, trophies, individual accolades, and his contribution to Portugal's 2016 European Championship victory.

Yet as his football career progresses, the conversation should focus more on those achievements and the legacy he's building. Instead, we're discussing his Instagram grievances.

That is where the reputational risk lies. A single incident won't undo decades of success, but it can shape the narrative around a public figure, especially as they approach the later stages of an exceptional career. In reputation management, the question isn't simply whether you have the right to respond. It's whether responding publicly will leave you in a stronger position than remaining silent or resolving the matter behind closed doors.

In this case, I believe Ronaldo has created a problem that didn't need to become public.

A stark contrast with Messi

The timing is particularly unfortunate. On the same evening, Ronaldo's long-standing rival, Lionel Messi, ended his international career with an emotional farewell in Buenos Aires.

The contrast with Messi couldn't be more striking. One of football's greatest players is being celebrated by his country, while the other is publicly arguing with his manager. Messi's farewell was dignified, emotional and fitting for a player of his stature. The focus was on his achievements, his contribution to his country and the affection he has earned throughout his career.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has invited scrutiny when he should be protecting his legacy. Of course, he hasn't retired yet, and he deserves a proper farewell when that day comes. But this is a lesson in knowing when to speak and when to let your achievements do the talking.

Ronaldo has apologised for leaving the Portugal camp, which was an important step. But an apology can lose impact when it sits alongside a lengthy explanation that someone else was at fault. Sometimes, the desire to have the final word does more damage than the original disagreement.

An extraordinary legacy worth protecting

I don't believe anyone will ultimately judge Ronaldo's career on one Instagram post. His contribution to football will carry far greater weight in determining how he is remembered. His place in football history is secure, and it would be wrong to suggest that one public disagreement could erase everything he has achieved.

However, these incidents can shape how people view the final years of a great career, particularly if they become a pattern. The final chapter can shape how people remember an entire body of work, even if it doesn't fundamentally change the achievements themselves.

Ronaldo's determination has helped make him one of the most successful athletes of our time. But that same competitive instinct can become a weakness when he feels he's been treated unfairly.

The Portuguese football legend deserves the same warmth and appreciation in international football that Messi received. It would be a shame if unnecessary disputes obscured what should be a celebration of an exceptional career.
